An unknown shrimp enthusiast did much work and spent an enormous amount of time to breed these red shrimp by selecting variants of the wild Neocaridina Heteropoda. Thus, the Red Cherry Shrimp is the result of careful and selective breeding. This variation was bred originally in Germany and didn’t appear in the US until the 1990s when it really took off in popularity. Because they are easy to care for, most people new to the hobby of raising and breeding shrimp will choose the Red Cherry Shrimp. They adapt to different water parameters easily. Just keeping the water clean, with the help of the algae eating shrimp, will provide a happy environment for the shrimp. Changing water when needed will also help to keep them healthy and breeding. Finally, a tank with without predators and with plants to feed on and spots to hide or climb in is very important. Being omnivores, Red Cherry Shrimp are not very picky about their diet. Anything that falls into the bottom of the tank may be considered to be food. They love to eat algae and will keep your tank clean. You should supplement their diet with fish food flakes and pellets if you have a large number of them in your tank. Blanched bits of vegetables are a good diet variation to keep the shrimp happy. When shrimp come toward the food in numbers then they are healthy. Sluggish feeding is not an auspicious sign of breeding or health. Shrimp will mate after they mature and your females will virtually stay pregnant once they are mature. After maturation, at about 3 months to six months depending on water conditions, they will molt. Immediately after molting is the only time a female can breed because her sex parts are still soft. Once they have mated, the female will carry her fertilized eggs for anywhere between 3 – 4 weeks. Then the young will hatch from the eggs. They will look like their parents but in miniature size. These are nonaggressive shrimp and get along well with each other and other species as well. They are active swimmers and beautiful to watch as they graze for algae. You can easily spend hours observing them because they are very social and move around grazing on algae during the day. When the females are berried, they like to hide in dark places. For that reason, it is good to have enough plants and props in the tank to provide many places to hide. Keep medicine away from your shrimp tank as medicine has often a lot of copper particles in it. This will irreversibly harm the shrimp. Copper or copper containing items should be totally kept away from shrimp or shrimp tanks.

My friend bought these shrimp and they were thriving in his tank. I bought shrimp from a local aqua store and they all died :(. Bought a batch of cherry red shrimp from Elite and so far they have been doing very well. Shipping was fast and no DOA's.

  3. No complaints here! 5 Star Review

My second order with Elite Inverts, both arrived on time and in great shape, only 1 casualty out of 15 ordered but an extra shrimp as lagniappe (cajun for a freebee) made up for that. I'm hoping to get some babies to really fill the tank up.

I bought these beautiful shrimp back on January 3rd. The reason i'm writing this so late is because i wanted to have a test of time and see just how well these shrimp keep up! And i have to say that without a doubt these shrimp were kept in pristine conditions prior to me receiving them! I give you the utmost praise for sending me such high quality and healthy shrimp. Thank you.

  7. Arrived Great. Not sure my aquarium was ready 5 Star Review

Posted by on 3rd Mar 2016

Everything arrived perfect. I think I got too ambitious. I had just converted my tank from artificial to live plants and added some fish. There are plenty of hiding places. At first the shrimp were active and great but I have seen them for days. I tested my water and the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate were high. I did a water change by fear I lost them
    unless they are hiding

  8. Red Cherry Shrimp 5 Star Review

Ordered 10 and was sent 11 (in case of DOA, which was nice). 1 was actually DOA, so I ended up with the 10.

The shrimp came packaged in a breather bag surrounded by newspaper and several inches of fiberglass insulation - a surprise as I was expecting foam, but probably a more capable insulator.

There was a piece of green plastic mesh in the bag for the shrimp to hold on to during transport.

The shrimp were good sized and about an even mix of male/female.

I put them in a 29G planted community tank that had 2 platys and 2 tetras at the time. They found the mopani driftwood shortly after this and took to hiding under it so I can't really see much of them. Then I noticed some of them in pieces. Apparently they were still too small and the other fish decided to have some for dessert. I have seen 2 RCS out at any given time (they do look bigger than when I got them) so not sure if that is all that remain or if there are more hiding. The other fish (now at 6 platys, 2 tetras) do seem to leave them alone. I include this bit just for reference that even if your fish have small mouths, they still might pick on/eat the RCS at the size that you receive them.

Overall, I was very satisfied with the quality of the RC Shrimp, the transaction, and the shipping/packaging from EliteInverts. Since I do want more RCS for my tank I will definitely be ordering again. This time, however, I am going to set up a separate tank for them so they can mature in size before adding them to the main tank. Gotta give the little guys a fighting chance. :-)

  9. Exactly what I ordered plus 1 4 Star Review

Posted by on 9th Jul 2015

Bought 10 RCS, they sent me 11 just to be nice, they arrived happy and healthy, sized from small to medium-small. Been about 2 weeks and one is already carrying eggs! Would buy from here again.

  10. Awesome RCS 5 Star Review

Received a double order (+2) right on time and in excellent health. Quite a few hiding right now, many in the java moss that I ordered at the same time. So... maybe expecting more!
