Strawberry Hermit Crab History
Strawberry hermit crabs live in the Indo-Pacific region, such as Madagascar and Indonesia, and certain areas of Australia, primarily Easter Island and the Great Barrier Reef. They were first described by Henri Milne-Edwards in 1837. Strawberry hermit crabs have a dark orange to reddish coloring, and they have white spots on their legs, hence the nickname “strawberry.” They have orange or gold leg joints and orange or red antennae. Strawberry hermit crabs have steel grey colored eyes, which distinguish them from other reddish colored hermit crabs. The average strawberry hermit crab is approximately 3” long and weighs 2.8 ounces, although they can grow larger. In the wild, hermit crabs live for as long as 30 years, but in captivity, you can expect your strawberry hermit crab to live about 4 years.

Strawberry Hermit Crab Care
Strawberry hermit crabs do not tolerate much fluctuation in temperature or humidity. If you can provide a steady temperature at around 80, and a humidity level of about 80%, then you have a greater chance of success with keeping your strawberry hermit crab alive. You should house your strawberry hermit crabs in a glass aquarium with a lid in order to ensure that temperature and humidity remain stable. Strawberry hermit crabs require a dish of salt water and a dish of fresh, non-chlorinated water, both of which should be large enough for the hermit crab to submerge itself fully in. Substrate, sand or forest bedding, should also be deep enough for the largest strawberry hermit crab in your tank to bury itself fully in. Strawberry hermit crabs like to climb, so a tank with vines, plants, wood, etc. will offer them plenty of climbing opportunities. They also like a variety of shells to choose from when molting.

Strawberry Hermit Crab Diet
Strawberry hermit crabs are omnivores. They enjoy a large variety in their diet, and they have many nutritional needs. They will eat shrimp, sardines, salmon, tuna, chicken, turkey, etc. For non-meat foods, you can feed fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, and oatmeal, granola, and other whole grains. You can also feed them packaged fish flakes and dried seaweed. In order for strawberry hermit crabs to maintain their coloring, you need to feed them foods containing beta-carotene; without enough beta-carotene, they will lose some of their coloring each time they molt. Include vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, and leafy, dark green vegetables in their diet regularly to prevent their colors from fading.

Strawberry Hermit Crab Molting
Strawberry hermit crabs will molt about once every 18 months. If they lose a limb, they may molt sooner in order to regenerate the limb. Be sure to have a moist sand or forest bedding substrate deep enough for him to molt in. The entire process can take up to a month before your hermit crab is back to his normal behavior. If you see that your hermit crab is preparing to molt, you can put him in an isolation tank; however, many strawberry hermit crabs are perfectly content to molt in the tank with other inhabitants. The strawberry hermit crab will eat his discarded exoskeleton, so there is no need to remove it from the tank.

Strawberry Hermit Crab Behavior
Strawberry hermit crabs are sociable, so they don’t like to be alone, and they will do well with other non-aggressive hermit crabs. However, be sure to have plenty of shells available so that they do not feel the need to fight over them. If your hermit crabs are different sizes, fighting over shells shouldn’t be a problem. Strawberry hermit crabs are very active and like to climb.

Special Notes
Strawberry hermit crabs are not an easy hermit crab for beginners because of their strict temperature and humidity requirements. You must be sure to maintain a temperature at 80F or just above, and humidity levels must be at 80% to 85% at all times. Heating pads and lighting can be used to maintain temperature, and you can spray non-chlorinated water into the tank once a day to help maintain humidity levels.

I just received the two I ordered. They are absolutely beautiful. As an experienced hermit crab owner, I can say that these crabs are definitely worth your money. I was worried they wouldn't make it because it was only 10° but I ordered the two-day FedEx shipping and they came with the heat packs still warm. They used insulation to keep the warmth in and it did a great job. I would definitely order again. Fantastic job Elite Inverts! They are very sizable - deep red, vibrant -strawberry Hermit Crabs. They also had all-natural shells. They are warming up in their ISO tank now. I wish I could post a photo!

  7. They are beautiful. 5 Star Review

Posted by on 26th Jul 2017

I have ordered live creatures from online vendors before but this is my first experience ordering hermit crabs online. I ordered them because Strawberries are nearly impossible to find in store and I only live a few states away so I knew they wouldn't have a long journey. I have wanted Strawberries for years now.

They were wrapped in a deli-like container that had moist napkins in it and the container itself was wrapped so they fit snugly in the box. They have gorgeous coloring and they are active. I dipped them in salt water before putting them into my main tank.

I am very satisfied with my order and I already have plans to order in a few months time.

I emailed prior to ordering with a sizing question and my email was responded to promptly, and I had crabs at my door about 48hrs after placing an order.

The crabs were packaged very securely and with a heat pack. They arrived that beautiful bright red with clear, shiny eyes, and seem to be in good shape.

    Thank you!

  10. Perfect! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 10th Apr 2017

My boyfriend and I are Hermit Crab Hobbyists and have various species of hermit crabs. We've bought 4 Strawberry's from here. The packaging, immediate shipping & condition of these crabs on arrival was perfect! Strawberrys are very sensitive to temp/humidity changes and can die rapidly if conditions aren't stable. We will not order these guys from anywhere else via mail because the likelihood of them being alive on arrival is slim.
