A popular shrimp because of their hardiness and color, the Tiger Shrimp is from China and other Southeast Asian countries originally. There are a number of wild varieties of this shrimp in several colors. It is a great shrimp for those who are novice and want to work with shrimp that are slightly more difficult than the Red Cherry Shrimp. The biggest requirement is an established tank and good water quality. Keeping their water clean by regular changes helps them to grow better and faster. A 10-gallon tank is large enough for an entire colony of Tiger Shrimp. For filtration, sponge filters are probably the best since they provide an additional source of food when the microorganisms get caught in the sponge. It is an easy-to-keep and breed shrimp. Although the water temperature range is fairly wide, ideal temperatures for these shrimp much more narrow, between 76 – 78 F. Water should be ammonium and nitrate free. They like to feed on algae, plant matter, fish food in the form of flakes or pellets, dead insects, special shrimp food, and even almond leaves. They practically eat whatever is available. Supplements are recommended, like calcium. Tiny bits of blanched zucchini or any other vegetable helps bring variety into their diet. Take care not to over feed them, since feeding them too much will kill them. They also stop eating algae that grows on the sides of the tank if they are being fed too much food.  Tiger Shrimp will breed with other species of shrimp. To avoid getting hybrids of unknown coloration, they should be kept in separate tanks. The adults will not eat their young so there is no danger in this respect. When the eggs hatch, after 3 – 4 weeks gestation, 20 – 25 hatchlings appear as tiny adults. The tank should have plenty of vegetation and rocks in it to provide adequate hiding places for pregnant shrimp and later for the hatchlings as well. The female will be ready to reproduce again within a few days. This is a very non-aggressive shrimp.  Keeping them together with other types of shrimp is not difficult from a safety point. They will cross breed with several other types of shrimp, however. If you want to be sure you are breeding only Tiger Shrimp and not hybrids, you may want to have a separate tank for each type of shrimp. It’s important to keep any and all copper products away from the shrimp tank and the little creatures living in there. Copper is very harmful to shrimp and will kill them if it is not removed.
