Blue Crayfish/"Lobster" sniffing out algae wafer (01:19)
At the beginning og the video I drop an algae wafer into the tank on the right side of the screen. See how long it takes for the electric blue crayfish/lobster to sniff the wafer out. And for what it's worth, this guy was already fed some crab pellets an hour or two before....

This crayfish is a variant of the Louisiana wild red crayfish that has become very popular among hobbyists.  The wild red is very popular among many people who enjoy different seafood and in fact 90% of the crayfish eaten across the globe come from Louisiana. Crayfish are omnivorous so if you have live plants in your tank they are going to eat them. Most shrimp are fine to keep with these guys because they are fast and stay out of the way of the Electric Blue Crayfish. They enjoy logs to hide under, driftwood and rock shelters.  Most aquarists enjoy keeping only one in a tank unless it is fairly large and in an aquarium of 100cm x 40 cm you can even keep up to five of these crayfish. They tolerate many water conditions as long as you stay away from the extremes and keep the tank clean. These crayfish are so hardy they can even be bred in plastic buckets. They can be messy eaters so make sure to do regular water changes.
If you want happy crayfish you’ll want to keep a steady supply of fresh plants for them to eat. In addition, they like algae wafers, sinking pellets, and excess fish food. They are great to have in your tank as part of the clean-up crew because they dine on left over fish food and algae. Make sure they have proper food otherwise they will spend time hunting your fish. A calcium supplement can also be recommended to keep their shells from growing deformed. These crayfish are easy to breed given the right conditions. Eggs are carried under the female’s tail and can be as many as 300 eggs and after 21 days of incubation the larvae are born. Females tend to have petite claws and the males have larger claws. In Mature males you will notice hooks on the ischia of the second and third pair of legs that are used for grasping the female during mating. The female’s posterior walking legs have a seminal receptacle on it. Most crayfish are nocturnal and this includes the Electric Blue Crayfish. They are shy during the day and prefer to hide under logs, caves or burrows. With tanks that have sand in the bottom you’ll notice they enjoy burrowing into the sand. Make sure to keep plenty of driftwood and other items in the tank for them to hide in and under during the day.Crayfish are very good at escaping so make sure to have a tight fitting lid on your tank. Additionally, they are so hardy that it is very important that you don’t release them into the wild as they can become invasive quickly.

They are shockingly small when they arrive. Plan to keep them away from other fish & crays lest they don't become someone's snack. They grow AMAZINGLY FAST!! in 3 weeks I have one well over an inch now!! That one will be moving to the 55 gal tank soon!!

  3. Tiny, But Healthy and Very cool! 5 Star Review

When I opened the box my jaw dropped at how small these guys actually were. the product description of 1/2 an inch is correct, but it still surprises you when you actually see them. Despite this they were both very healthy and packaged well. Im very happy with my purchase but it would be smart for them to put up a picture of the baby crayfish so customers know exactly what they're getting.
