The Yellow Neo Shrimp originated in Japan and travelled to the U.S. after it had been selectively and successfully bred to have their gorgeous bright yellow color. It was bred from a wild type but unfortunately, the original breeder of this particular species is not known. This most hardy little creature can adapt to almost any water parameter within reason. So long as the water in the tank is clean and free of disease and predators, this little shrimp will do just fine. Maintenance of the aquarium and water changes once or twice a week will keep the tank clean and the shrimp healthy. Changing water is best if you change about a quarter of the tank water once or twice a week. This will keep the water conditions more stable and less stressful on the inhabitants. Be sure to provide enough plants in the tank that they can hide in order to feel more secure. The diet if the Yellow Neo Shrimp is basically the same as that of all aquatic omnivores. Their staple is the algae and bio-film that is ever-present in tanks. Supplements consist of fish food flakes or pellets. Algae wafers are a nice change as well. They also love a blanched spinach leaf or two. Don’t give them more food than they need because by overfeeding them they can easily die. Once a month, you can let them skip a feeding. That is actually good for them. They won’t starve because of the algae in the tank. These shrimp are very prolific breeders. The sexually mature female will develop a saddle in which she has ovaries and eggs. The male will deposit sperm into the female right after she has molted because that is the time she is soft enough on her underside for breeding. Her approximately 25 eggs will travel through the sperm deposit and get fertilized along the way. In about 4 – 6 weeks, the young will hatch as tiny adult forms.  In a few days, the female will be ready to breed again. Females are almost constantly pregnant. This results in many progeny. A sponge filter is necessary to avoid sucking in the tiny hatchlings and killing them. These are non-aggressive shrimp and can live a happy, social life with each other as well as with other species. As it often happens, cross breeding will result in unknown hybrids. It is a good idea to keep them in a separate tank if at all possible. Generally, they will swim all day long in search of food, scavenging on the bottom of the tank or along the sides, where they clean algae as they eat. Do not let any items or medicines come into contact with your shrimp or your shrimp tank. Copper is very harmful to your shrimp and may, in fact, prove to be deadly to them. Many medicines made for fish tanks contain copper. For that reason, do not medicate your tank without seeking professional advice first.

I ordered some yellows from elite inverts some time ago and was so please with their bright colors and just over all gung-oh attitude I ordered some more. I have gotten mixed batches of sizes including full grown (ready to mate) and some tiny little guys. As a first time owner of shrimp, these have been very hardy and interesting to watch for hours! Perfect little tank cleaners to boot! Highly suggested.

  5. so tiny! 4 Star Review

Plants and shrimp arrived alive. What I didn't realize is that they shrimp were going to be so tiny--barely half a centimeter in length!
I'm not even sure (after paying $40 +$40 shipping)if they are still alive in my tank since I can't see any of them.
I wish I would've known they were going to be so small/young.
